It is an ancient custom practiced by Lanna people. There is a common practice of decorating Wat (Buddhist monasteries) and houses with lanterns and floating flower shaped vessels made of banana leaves in the canals. Khom Loy or balloon lanterns and Khom Kwan or smoke lanterns are released into the air to worship the relics of Buddha or Phra That Chula Manee which is up in the heaven. Various kinds of entertainment are set for the celebration.
